The
cockpit was completely rebuilt using the nonskid panels. I decided
to do this because I was tired of the dirt under the old slats, and
of the water that sloshed into the lazarettes when I opened them
after a rain. The old teak slats were in terrible shape and some were coming off, so they got
torn out, along with the false compartment trays on the forward part
of the seats. What a job those forward trays were. Oscar had a
steep learning curve here. The 1st attempt failed when we
found that the nonskid on the seats cracked under body weight where
it wasn't supported. So the nonskid surface got ground off and we
drilled a lot of ½" holes into the seats and poured a 2-part foam
into them. Then he put on new pieces of nonskid. He made a real
mess and we ended up having to re-gelcoat the entire cockpit.
